03/1997 There are four spigot mortar positions in Beacon Hill Fort. This one lies in fact outside the northern extension of the fort. All are of a standard pattern, with a gun pit containing the central circular concrete pedestal, 1. 0m in diameter, with a stainless steel gun pivot on top, surrounded by four rectangular ammunition lockers, each 1. 00m wide by 0. 60m deep. The pit was reached by a narrow passage or flight of steps between lockers.
