Fort Breendonk is a former military fortification located near Willebroek, Belgium, that was originally constructed between 1906 and 1913 as part of Belgium's National Redoubt defense line. During World War II, the fortress was repurposed by Nazi forces as an Auffanglager (reception camp) from 1940 to 1944, becoming one of the most infamous prison camps in occupied Belgium. Today, it serves as the National Memorial Fortress of Breendonk, standing as a solemn testament to the horrors of Nazi occupation and the suffering endured by prisoners during this dark period of history.
