2000 The Operation Base for the Hayle Auxiliary Unit was located in a disused mine tunnel at Wheal Merth, in a valley just S of Lelant Downs. The OB was found after the war by people carrying out surveys on old mine workings. It consisted of a construction built into the right hand side of the tunnel around 30ft - 40ft from the collapsed mine portal. The area was built with nissen style corrugated iron sheeting and housed about 15 army style bunks.
