The Līgatne Soviet Bunker is a former top-secret nuclear shelter located near Līgatne, Latvia. Built 9 meters underground, this bunker was constructed during the Cold War era to serve as a secure refuge for Latvia's Communist Party elite in the event of a nuclear conflict. The facility remained classified for decades, with even employees of the adjacent rehabilitation center unaware of its existence for over 30 years.
The bunker has been preserved with its original Soviet-era equipment and exhibits, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Cold War military preparedness. The underground complex features authentic communication systems, medical facilities, and living quarters that would have housed high-ranking officials during a potential nuclear emergency. Today, it serves as a unique military heritage tourism site, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of the Soviet period and learn about Latvia's Cold War history.
