Description

This research is automated and may contain errors.

2000 The Truro Auxiliary Unit built its first Operational Base (this record) in 1940 in Calenick Wood. It was built underground from timber and corrugated iron sheeting. It measured about 11ft x 8ft and was fitted out with bunks. It had one entrance and no emergency exit. The OB collapsed some three years ago (c.

1997). The patrol was not happy with this OB and during 1941 decided to build a second one (UORN 12543) at Penwethers (Wheal East Falmouth). This was built in a disused mine tunnel, from timber and corrugated iron and was fitted out with bunks made from timber and wire netting. An escape tunnel was constructed by enlarging an air vent and constructing a ladder.

The surface cover (a wooden hatch) was camouflaged with an old tree stump. Explosives were stored in the OB and night duties were spent in it. (Information to recorder from Mr. Robert Lewarne and Mr. Frederick J. Keast, surviving members of the patrol).
