Description

This research is automated and may contain errors.

18/08/1998 This minefield was situated to cover the beach approaches on the E side of Hayle estuary entrance. The reason for the defence was that the only power station in Cornwall and a chemical factory producing a vital ingredient for aviation fuel were sited just inside the estuary. After the war, when the minefield was cleared, it was found that 30 mines could not be accounted for and are presumably still somewhere beneath the sands or out in St. Ives Bay.
