The Bunker Complex Ungerberg is a former Austrian military fortification located near the Austrian-Slovenian border. Built during the Cold War era as part of Austria's secret defensive network, this bunker was designed to protect the neutral Alpine republic from potential invasions by NATO or Warsaw Pact forces. The complex features an impressive two-and-a-half-meter-thick concrete encasement, demonstrating the significant engineering efforts made to withstand prolonged attacks.
The interior of the bunker includes specialized facilities such as a telephone exchange, a medical room, and even a niche for coffins, highlighting its comprehensive design for extended military operations. A decommissioned howitzer, still maintained in working order, remains on site as a testament to the careful preservation of military equipment. Since 2005, the Bunker Museum Wurzenpass has opened this historically significant site to visitors, offering unique insights into Austria's Cold War defensive strategy and military history.
