Description

By: giove. Read more... This monument was built from 1920 to 1927 in order to memorate and honour the 700.000 soldiers which fell in the battle of Verdun. On the cemetary are 15.000 French soldiers and under the monument they placed the remains of some 130.000 unknown Frenh and German soldiers.

The battle took place from feb 1916 to dec 1916 and was started by the Germans in order to bleed the French army to dead. They didn't succeed. Both sides took almost equal huge losses. The battle field is only 20 x 20 km's and it is said that each square meter was hit dozens of times by heavy artillery shells.

Even today shells and remains are found every day. The Douaumont cemetary and monument are impressive reminders of this trenchwar. Never Again is the message.
