02/07/1998 One of the road blocks constructed by Northamptonshire County Council by mid-July 1940, on behalf of the South Midlands Area Command. It was constructed on a site approved by the CRE Oxford District. The carriageway was not permanently blocked but steel stanchions and or sand bags and lump stone were provided in order to close the road quickly in the event of an emergency.

Together with three other roadblocks around Buttocks Booth it formed one of the 17 original roadblocks set up around Northampton in 1940. In mid 1941 the roadblocks were strengthened with concrete cylinders - used as outer defences to prevent enemy tanks making a rush at the steel-work. With the designation of Northampton as a nodal point in September 1941 and the creation of defended localities in the town all four Buttocks Booth roadblocks were abandoned and the concrete cylinders moved to reinforce other defences.

Buttocks Booth road blocks were manned by members of the 12th Northamptonshire Home Guard (Northampton Borough) from mid-1940 until their closure the following year. For further information see SRF.
