02/12/1998 This pillbox was built in the apex of the A3082 road and the B3269 road at the Newtown crossroads just W of Fowey. It was built in the SW angle of the two roads and was camouflaged as a hayrick. The pillbox no longer exists as the road has been widened and the complete crossroads redesigned since the war.
(The recorder spoke to a resident of nearby Golant who remembered the pillbox. He told him that on VE Day he and a friend went into Fowey to watch the Victory bonfire, but arrived too late and the bonfire had gone out. On their way home to Golant they decided to have their own private bonfire and set light to the camouflage hayrick covering the pillbox.
Apparently it was a good fire and many rats departed their burning residence. The pillbox was unharmed).
