Description

25/02/1996 This was a Civil Reserve Petrol storage site during WW2. It consisted of 6 x 6000 cu. metre tanks partially underground. One of these tanks was hit by a bomb during an air raid and the tanks and petrol were totally destroyed. All tanks have recently been removed and the site cleared for a housing site.

(The site was bombed on 30 May 1944 and one fuel tank was ruptured and set on fire. A US Navy Chief Boatswain, Philip Lee, helped to fight the fire by using a bulldozer to dam up petrol flow. He subsequently received the British Empire Medal for conspicuous bravery and a Navy and Marine Corps Medal from President of USA.

The fuel at this site was for use by the D-Day invasion fleet).
