The site at these coordinates is the former Lourdes SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) facility, located near Havana, Cuba. Operated by Soviet and later Russian foreign intelligence services, it was the largest such facility outside of Russia. Construction began in July 1962, and the complex covered approximately 73 km².
Separately, archaeological research has documented a system of coastal bunkers and trenches from the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis in the broader region. Within one of these Missile Crisis-era bunkers, researchers discovered defiant graffiti, likely written by a Cuban soldier, declaring that surrender was not an option.
The Lourdes facility and the Missile Crisis bunkers represent two distinct Cold War military installations in Cuba, associated with different phases and intelligence/defense priorities of the period.
