The Secret Soviet Bunker in Līgatne is a Cold War-era underground shelter built in the 1980s to protect Latvia's Communist Party leadership in the event of a nuclear conflict. Located 9 meters beneath the Rehabilitation Centre "Līgatne", the bunker was designed to serve as a secure command post and living quarters for the country's elite. Its existence remained classified for decades, with even staff at the adjacent rehabilitation center unaware of its presence until after Latvia regained independence.
The bunker features authentic Soviet-era equipment and furnishings that have been preserved since its construction, offering visitors a glimpse into the paranoid atmosphere of the late Cold War period. Exhibits include communication systems, medical facilities, and living quarters that illustrate how the leadership planned to survive a potential nuclear exchange. The facility represents a significant example of Soviet civil defense architecture in the Baltic states.
