Description

02/11/2000 The St. Columb Major auxiliary unit patrol constructed their own operational base in a tunnel which led directly into Castle-an-Dinas tungsten mine. The tunnel entrance was only a few yards N of the ancient fort. About one hundred yards into this tunnel, a large chamber 16ft x 10ft was dug out to use as a bunker.

It had natural rock walls with no linings. Large heavy wooden doors were fitted at the entrance. No emergency exit was constructed. The mine was in use throughout the war and the bunker would have seemed like one of the mine buildings. The patrol members were all miners. (There is one survivor today (2001) , Mr.

W. E. Roberts, whose photograph is with this record).
