The Bunker Complex Ungerberg is a former military fortification located in eastern Austria, near the border with Hungary. Built during the Cold War era, this extensive bunker system was designed to withstand prolonged attacks and served as a defensive stronghold for Austrian forces. The complex features a massive concrete structure with walls up to two and a half metres thick, demonstrating the serious defensive preparations made during this tense period of European history.
The interior of the Ungerberg bunker includes various specialized rooms that reflect its military purpose, including a telephone exchange for communications, a medical facility for treating wounded personnel, and even a niche designed for storing coffins. A notable feature of the complex is the preserved howitzer artillery piece, which has been carefully maintained and remains in working condition despite being decommissioned. The bunker now serves as part of Austria's military heritage, with the Museum of Military History maintaining and showcasing this significant Cold War structure.
