Description

This research is automated and may contain errors.

02/1999 The coastal battery at Toll Point at the entrance to the Helford River. It consisted of one gun (almost certainly 75mm) , a searchlight in front of the gun and lower down the cliff at sea level, together with a generator building and accommodation for the gunners. It was manned by the regular army.

Helford River was used as a base for special forces engaged in clandestine operations by sea between Cornwall and N France. It was later used by the US forces as an embarkation hard for the Normandy invasion. Although the battery was demolished after the war, traces of the concrete foundations of what was probably the gun position and battery observation post etc. can still be seen in the meadow at the top of the cliffs.
