The Defence of Britain

Description: The site of a Royal Air Force Chain Home radar station at Sennen established by 1941. Chain Home stations provided early warning of approaching enemy aircraft during the Second World War. Chain Home stations commonly comprised transmission and receiver blocks, four 240ft timber receiver aerial towers, four 350ft steel transmitter aerial towers that stood on concrete pads, and other buildings such as dispersed accommodation huts, guard huts and standby set houses. From 1940 defensive measures were installed at radar stations, including Light Anti-Aircraft gun emplacements, pill boxes, road blocks and air raid shelters. The station was technically restored in the early 1950s as part of the Rotor programme. Aerial photography from 1947 shows an operations block located at SW 372 249. 1960s maps show that the receiver towers were located at SW 373 250 and SW 3754 2490. The transmission towers were located at SW 3760 2474, SW 3762 2464, SW 3742 2442 and SW 3744 2434. Three buildings associated with the station were located at SW 374 250 and further structures potentially associated were located at SW 371 248.

Designation: CH17 Sennen.

Source: NMR Click here for more details

EDOBID: e25095

Last Edited:

Images: None
