24/01/1999 A complex of infantry trenches was dug on the common in June 1940 by troops from the camps sited to the S and W of the Morgan Works (Flight Refuelling (?) ). Their purpose was probably to defend the vicinity against parachute landings on the extensive open spaces in this area. The trenches were filled in, the vicinity remains very undulating today. (Information from a map produced by a local resident during 1940 and shown to the recorder).
